This fish is native to Central America in Mexico, Honduras, Belize, Guatemala. It grows to be very large and gets extremely aggressive. In the wild, it will sit at the bottom waiting for prey to swim bye and then it ambushes them, similarly to some Malawi Cichlids, and other Parachromis. They are very similar in appearance to the Parachromis motaguensis, and the Parachromis managuensis, so it is not recommended to mix in the same tank. It must be housed with other very aggressive fish, or be kept alone in its own tank. This fish has beautiful yellow coloration with black spots and striping. Females are a bit more yellow, while the males develop a more copper color as they mature.
