Description: Big Eye Catalufa are unique fish that are ideal for the hobbyist looking for something different. They are vibrant red in color with a large mouth and large red eyes. The tips of the dorsal, caudal, anal, and pelvic fins are fringed in black. This fish's large eyes are an adaptation to its deep-water habitat and nocturnal behavior. The Big Eye Catalufa originates from the Eastern Pacific, along the coasts of California to Peru, with sightings in the Galapagos Islands. This fish should be housed in a larger fish-only or FOWLR aquarium. Due to their nocturnal behavior, this fish prefers dim lighting in the tank. Be sure to provide plenty of caves, overhangs, and hiding places for this fish to feel comfortable in the aquarium. Decor should be on the "softer" side, as it is easy for the Big Eye Catalufa to injure its eyes on sharp objects. Although this fish is predatory and large, it has a peaceful demeanor. Tank mates should include large, mellow fish that cannot fit in the Big Eye Catalufa's mouth. This fish will not bother corals, but it is not considered reef-safe, as it will eat any small fish or invertebrates that can fit in its mouth. Feed this fish a variety of large, meaty frozen foods.
