Absolutely Fish is in the “Shrimpn’ Bidness”

That's right, the newest addition to the Absolutely Fish aquaculture facility line up are freshwater dwarf shrimp! 
As our late, great, aquaculture facility specialist Paul T would say:

“We’re in the shrimpin’ bidness, Boss!”

We have launched 12 new tanks hosting 9 color morphs of Neocaridina davidi and 2 color morphs of Caridini cantonensis. Our two-tier, six foot rack is home to 10 gallon aquariums filtered and circulated by matten-style upwellers (see photos). The square sponge pads provide a large surface area for beneficial nitrifying bacteria and biofilm to culture. By utilizing this strictly air-driven filtration with no moving parts we eliminate any risk to the even tiniest of shrimp fry from being injured by their life support system while still maintaining proper water chemistry and providing a huge surface area for our dwarf shrimp to graze endlessly. We have opted to run these tanks bare-bottom to easily remove excess detritus while reducing the risk of accidentally removing any “shrimplets”, so to provide additional surface area and buffering capacity we have introduced Absolutely Fish Naturals Biological Ceramic Media, natural driftwood, and for our Caridina shrimp, mesh filter pouches filled with active plant substrate (Aqualife Andisoil).

  Each tank operates individually but shares one large air pump via a pvc manifold. This set up allows us to support all 12 tanks on just one Aquarium air pump and ensures no accidental cross breeding between color strains that would muddle their true breeding color.

The shrimp are very independent little critters and thrive on our “neglect” by which I mean we keep water changes to a minimum, top off with RO water amended to the appropriate pH, and only remove excess food and detritus via a 1/16” desilt hose. This helps to ensure stability in their environmental parameters which allow the shrimp to grow, molt, and breed with ease.

The Neocaridina shrimp we currently house are Cherry Reds, Red Rili, Sunkist Orange, Orange Rili, Blue Velvet's, Goldenback Yellows, Snowball Whites, Chocolates, and Green Jades.

We also have small colonies of Crystal Red, Black Galaxy and Black King Kong shrimp. The first batch of Absolutely Fish raised Neocaridina have already migrated their way over from Garfield NJ to our Clifton retail location during our World Fish Migration Day event, so come on down and grab yourself some high grade shrimp raised in your own local water!
