Description: Barberpole Gobies are known for their peaceful personality, small size, and their ability to pair with a pistol shrimp (Alpheus sp.). They are white in color with a deep red, diagonal striping pattern. They also have a yellow face and a prominent, black dorsal spine. The Barberpole Goby hails from the Indo-Western Pacific region. In the wild, they specifically pair with the Alpheus randalli shrimp; however, this goby can be paired with any other species of pistol shrimp. The goby and shrimp will display a symbiotic relationship in the aquarium, where each animal benefits. The pistol shrimp will dig a burrow in the sand. The Barberpole Goby will use this sand burrow as a hideout to protect itself from predators. This fish also acts as a "lookout" for the pistol shrimp. As the goby hovers around the entrance of the sand burrow, it can also warn the pistol shrimp of any incoming predators. This fish is an awesome choice for beginner aquarists keeping a nano-aquarium. The Barberpole Goby is hardy and will readily accept all prepared foods. Be sure to provide this fish with a nice sandbed and some rockwork to hide around. A tight-fitting lid is recommended as this fish can easily jump out of the aquarium.
